In conjunction with the exhibition, PAN: Fin de Siecle Prints: Art Nouveau on Paper and the special Clayton Art and Culture tour.

Certain movements, such as Art Nouveau, and certain art patrons, such as Henry Clay Frick, demonstrate to us just how thoroughly art can infiltrate essentially every part of life. This two-day workshop will investigate how “style” becomes ubiquitous—showing up in architecture, furniture and interior design, graphic design, clothing, jewelry, vehicles, decorative arts and housewares—and how cultivating an awareness of these patterns can serve as a valuable teaching tool.

Standards-based activities and studio projects are designed to heighten visual literacy skills and encourage critical thinking and self-expression.

In conjunction with the special Clayton tour, All the Ladies of the House.

The concept of using objects to unlock another time or culture, or Object-based Learning Theory, is the focus of this workshop, which encourages play with purpose. Hands-on activities will model how close observation of artifacts—in museums as well as in classroom settings—can sharpen higher-level thinking skills that require problem solving, creativity, critical thinking and communication.

In conjunction with the exhibition For My Best Beloved Sister Mia: An Album of Photographs by Julia Margaret Cameron

Photography and the Victorian art of photo collage serve as the media for this workshop focusing on Visual Literacy. Teachers will hone their understanding of the learning theory and cultivate skills to help students discover meaning in the images they both see and create.

Participants are asked to bring with them several photographs of themselves, family and friends for use in the workshop. All other materials will be provided, and all photos will be returned.

As fair season takes hold in counties across the region, the Frick looks back at the fair that defined the Gilded Age--the World’s Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago in 1893.

Come for coffee and a discussion about what made the fair so significant, how it forever altered the nation--and its ties to both Pittsburgh and Henry Clay Frick himself. References to Erik Larson’s book, The Devil in the White City, will add an inside view of the events.

No need to read ahead…but more fun if you do!

This program offers visitors a chance to experience Clayton after hours, when the rooms in the house have a different look and feel in the evening light. Special evening tours, led by Frick education and curatorial staff, will delve a little deeper into the thematic topic presented. Meet at the Visitor Center for wine and cheese and a little conversation before the tour.
