Friday, 06 August, 2010 - First Fridays at the Frick: Dane Vannater

One of Pittsburgh’s most popular summertime events is the annual First Fridays at the Frick outdoor musical performance series, which take place on the first Friday of each summer month on the Great Lawn in front of Clayton. Picnic dinners will be available at The Cafe.

Recipient of the 2006 Bistro Award for Outstanding Vocalist by the critics of BackStage magazine in New York, Dane Vannatter has been acclaimed by reviewers at The New York Post, The Boston Globe and BackStage for a style that 'blends facets of cabaret and jazz with intelligence and care.'

Dane is also the recipient of the 2000 Bistro Award for Outstanding CD for his second recording, 'Flight.' He has been nominated for 4 MAC awards and is a 2007 Nightlife Award finalist. Dane has performed for several years at the annual Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention at Town Hall in New York; and has also performed in New York at the legendary Sardi's, Danny's Skylight Room and the Metropolitan Room.

This program offers visitors a chance to experience Clayton after hours, when the rooms in the house have a different look and feel in the evening light. Special evening tours, led by Frick education and curatorial staff, will delve a little deeper into the thematic topic presented. Meet at the Visitor Center for wine and cheese and a little conversation before the tour.

White Tie Group (WTG), formerly known as Symphony Jazz Trio, is a jazz ensemble comprising PSO musicians Harold Smoliar (English horn), piano; Don Evans, bass; and Andy Reamer (percussion), drums.

The group has evolved into its present form over the last 20 years, performing regularly in such Pittsburgh jazz spots as The Rhythm House and at events that include the Reservoir Jazz series in Highland Park and Citiparks Courtyard Jazz series at the City-County Courthouse.

Featuring more than 70 drawings produced over a four-hundred-year period, this exhibition includes works by Jacques Callot, Antoine Watteau, Jean-Baptiste Greuze, François Boucher and Jean-François Fragonard, among others, with the 19th century represented by choice sheets from François-Marius Granet, Théodore Rousseau, Jean Forain, Théodore-Alexandre Steinlen and others who reflect shifts in the approach to drawing in the modern era.

The full scope of drawing and its uses is represented, from preliminary sketches, compositional studies and figure studies to finished drawings. Especially rich in 17th-and 18th-century drawings, the exhibition illustrates the rise to dominance of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture as one of the most dominant cultural and political institutions in Europe. Organized from the Blanton Museum of Art’s impressive collection, the drawings have received fresh scholarly attention and will be examined in detail in the accompanying catalogue.

Children and their accompanying adults are invited to this unique Frick event that combines enjoying a cozy picnic lunch, learning new wayfinding skills and sharing the excitement of hunting for special boxes hidden all around our lovely, five-acre site. Please DO walk on the grass as you learn to use a compass (and even a GPS unit) and follow clues to The Horse’s Gaze, Lucky Thirteen, Electric Concrete, and many more!

Ages 7 and up and accompanying adult. Held outdoors, rain or shine. Fee includes personal stamp, letterboxing notebook and picnic lunch. Registration and pre-payment required.

The latter half of the 19^th century was a time of elaborate rules of etiquette, and mourning the loss of a loved one had its own special customs and traditions. Join Amanda Gillen for coffee and discussion about the meanings of these traditions, how they where practiced across cultural and economic lines and how important social cues were embedded in mourning practices.

As fair season takes hold in counties across the region, the Frick looks back at the fair that defined the Gilded Age--the World’s Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago in 1893.

Come for coffee and a discussion about what made the fair so significant, how it forever altered the nation--and its ties to both Pittsburgh and Henry Clay Frick himself. References to Erik Larson’s book, The Devil in the White City, will add an inside view of the events.
