Happy Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom, Family, and Heritage

Today is Juneteenth, the 155th anniversary of the emancipation of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas—an event that signified the true end to the Civil War, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. June 19, 2020 is also the first anniversary of Pennsylvania's declaration of June 19th as Juneteenth National Freedom Day. This year, The Frick Pittsburgh invited renowned jazz drummer, composer, producer, and bandleader Poogie Bell and his son, musician Winston Bell, to reflect on the holiday and their upcoming gig at the Frick. We hope you enjoy their chat—and that we'll see you again soon, online, for the Bell Family & Friends performance for Summer Fridays at the Frick presented by UPMC Health Plan!
