Preservation in Progress: Protecting Clayton into the Future

Explore Clayton’s evolution from a family home to a public museum on this specialty preservation tour. Learn about Clayton’s extensive restoration in the late 1980’s and ongoing efforts to preserve the home for the future, including rare access to the third floor to show the importance and impact of preservation.

  • This tour includes the first, second, and third floors. The first floor of the house is wheelchair accessible.
  • All Clayton tours begin at the Grable Visitor Center. Advance reservations are highly recommended.

Know Before You Go

  • This tour requires participants to climb and descend over 35 steps on staircases that are steep and narrow; an elevator or lift is not available. For more information about this, please contact education@thefrickpittsburgh.org or call 412-342-4087.
  • This tour visits unrestored areas of Clayton and requires visitors to climb and descend steep staircases, so sensible shoes are a must. Open-toed shoes, flip-flops and high-heeled shoes are prohibited.
  • The third floor of Clayton is not climate controlled and temperatures in those spaces fluctuate relative to outside temperatures. Please dress accordingly.
  • This tour is for adults 18 years and older. Children, including infants and toddlers, are not permitted on the Behind-the-Scenes Tour.
  • Photography is not permitted in Clayton.
  • By purchasing tickets to visit the third floor, all visitors are required to sign a liability waiver
