This fall’s thematic tour of Clayton explores the intricate social customs people were expected to follow after the death of a loved one during the late 19th century. Through artifacts, photographs, and archival documents focused on the Frick family’s personal experiences, visitors will learn about the strict code of etiquette that guided public behavior during mourning as well as historical notions of death and the afterlife.PLEASE NOTE: An important conservation project is currently underway at Clayton. The project addresses the Penn Avenue-facing façade and porch of the building, including the enclosed areas of the porch. For the duration of the project, the Penn Avenue entrance and the Enclosed Porch will be closed. Tours will enter Clayton through the kitchen entrance. We will continue to offer one-hour tours of Clayton, and we thank you for your patience and support as we complete the important work that is essential to maintaining the integrity of this historic home.
