Lecture Program: Rembrandt: The Man and the Myth

This talk by Kahren Jones Arbitman, Ph.D. will attempt to refute the myths, lay out the facts, and present Rembrandt van Rijn as a man of prodigious talent who lived according to his own lights and suffered the consequences. It will begin with his earliest works created in his hometown Leiden and follow him to Amsterdam where triumphs and tragedies awaited.

Kahren Jones Arbitman, Ph.D.

Kahren Jones Arbitman received both an MA and Ph.D. in art history from the University of Pittsburgh with a specialization in seventeenth-century Dutch art, more specifically, Rembrandt. She has published books, catalogues, and articles on the subject. In 1985, she became the first curator-in-charge of The Frick Art Museum where she organized its first temporary exhibitions and educational programs. In 1990, Dr. Arbitman was named director of the Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State where she oversaw the design, construction, and installation of a new building by the renowned Post-Modern architect Charles W. Moore. In 1996 Dr. Arbitman was named Executive Director of the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens in Jacksonville, Florida. The two exhibitions she curated of Rembrandt etchings from the Carnegie Museum of Art traveled the country including a stop in Pittsburgh. Dr. Arbitman has been an invited speaker at museums, galleries, and universities in the United States and abroad. She is delighted to be back “home” in Pittsburgh and to once again be on stage at The Frick.
