Description:
The 1990s movies that brought adaptations of Shakespeare into mainstream culture are a genre all their own – and many of them are just plain fun. Join us for an exploration of some of the best in our monthly series – we’ll bring the popcorn!

Gary Logan from the Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama will give a brief intro for each film and host a quick group discussion afterward for those who are interested. For the July film, this will be done by Frick staff. Doors to the Museum will open at 6:30 p.m. and From Stage to Page: 400 Years of Shakespeare in Print will be open.

Captions will be on for each movie, and ASL interpretation will be provided.

The Frick follows the CDC’s recommendations based on Covid-19 transmission levels in Allegheny Country. If the level is HIGH at the time of the program, masks will be required indoors except when individuals are eating or drinking. If you have symptoms or have tested positive for Covid-19, please stay home.
Shakespeare on Screen, 1990s Style: Romeo + Juliet
Baz Luhrmann's post-modern adaptation of Romeo + Juliet (1996) sets the star-crossed lovers in the fictional California city of Verona Beach, where the Montagues and the Capulets are rival gangs. Juliet (Claire Danes) attends a costume ball thrown by her parents. Her father has arranged her marriage to the boorish Paris (Paul Rudd), as part of a strategic investment plan. Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) attends the ball, and he and Juliet fall in love. Runtime: 120 minutes.

Gary Logan is the author of The Eloquent Shakespeare (University of Chicago Press). Before becoming a Professor of Speech & Dialects for CMU's School of Drama, he was Director of the Shakespeare Theatre Company's MFA Program in Washington, DC, and presented Shakespeare annually at the Library of Congress.
